I am considering getting a tutor for my child. Can you recommend anyone?
If you go to Livonia Public Schools website then click on the "Parents" tab, then scroll down to "Tutor List", there is a list of qualified tutors in various subjects.

Where do I drop off my child in the morning?
Our class lines up on the sidewalk, located next to the playground, at the back of the school. The students know which line is ours. You can park on Richland Street to drop off your child. PLEASE be sure to supervise your child crossing the street if you are parked across from the school. We would appreciate it if you would take extra caution when pulling away from the school; occasionally children will dart out in front of cars in their rush to get to their class line.

What are 'gold tickets'?
Golden  Tickets are one of Garfield's many ways of recognizing student achievement and positive behavior. If your child receives a Gold Ticket, his/her name goes in a drawing. Once a month two names from each class are drawn to have a George's Senate Coney Island lunch with the principal. The lunch treat is at Garfield and enjoyed with Mrs. Kohler.

My child would like to celebrate his/her birthday with the class. Can we bring in a birthday treat?

Absolutely!  I ask that you please keep the birthday treat simple due to time and mess.    Please make sure that birthday treats are in individual sizes.  No whole cakes please:)  Please let me know a day or so in advance.

Why does my child have homework?

Daily math homework is part of our Everyday Mathematics program. The homework, or Homelink, is an integral part of the math program. It helps review and reinforce skills taught in class that day, as well as help build on upcoming skills.

The books sent home for reading homework are books we have read in class. Re-reading helps develop fluency and comprehension.

What temperature does it need to be for the students to remain inside for recess?

Students will remain indoors when the temperature, with the wind chill, falls below 15 degrees Fahrenheit.  Please be sure your child is dressed for the appropriate weather.  Only in special circumstances may a student be excused from going outdoors.  A note from the parent is required at such times.  Extended requests must be accompanied by a doctor's note. (See also page 31 of the handbook.)

What do I need to do if my child will be bringing lunch money to school?
Put it in a clear plastic baggy or envelope with your child's name and purpose clearly labelled on it.

What if my child has lost something (gloves, hats, boots, etc.) at school?

Check the Lost and Found, located by the front doors. Please label everything your child brings to school to assist it getting returned more quickly.

How late can I call you into the evening and how early in the morning?
Please call before 9:00 pm in the evenings or after 7:00 am in the mornings. If you get my voice mail, it helps if you leave a detailed message. Also let me know a good time to call you back.
